Networking Breakfast :'Networking - is it intentional or not?' Friday 5 May 2006

Vic ICT for Women hosted its first Networking event for 2006: 'Networking - is it intentional or not?' on Friday 5 May.

The breakfast event, held at the Level 46, 55 Collins St in Melbourne, attracted 79 guests representing a wide cross section of the ICT industry at various levels, for public and private sector, across urban and regional Victoria.

Guests spent 40 minutes networking and eating breakfast before moving into the auditorium to hear from Rhonda O'Donnell, Vic ICT for Women Chair and a panel of  Vic ICT for Women Board Members representing small business, academia and generation Y. The panel provided insight on how intentional and unintentional networking can contribute to career success and development while providing personal insight into their own experiences of networking.

At the conclusion of the presentations, the lively question and answer session and awarding of the 'lucky door prize' guests took advantage of the 'intentional' networking opportunity before the official close of the event.

Vic ICT for Women is thrilled with the success of the event and is looking forward to hosting many more networking breakfasts.

Our Top Networking Tips:

  • Events aren't the only place to network - use online networks such as 'Link Me'.
  • Don't be afraid to ask... for help, for information.
  • Be yourself
  • Get involved - volunteer, join a committee, work with others -
  • Use your networks for support, look for solutions outside your organisation
  • Use networking for career advancement - many job opportunities aren't advertised - use your network to find out what opportunities are available.
  • Remember networking can be for life.
  • Networking is only as effective as you make it. Simply handing out your business card won't produce results
