About our Programmes

At Vic ICT for Women, we pride ourselves on creating programs that inform and support women right from school age all the way to the top. We want to ensure your enthusiasm for ICT is encouraged, nurtured and passed along to the next generation of women through events and programs structured to help at each stage in your journey.

Despite 70% growth of ICT jobs since 1996, women account for only 16% of ICT roles.

The Victorian ICT for Women Network is an industry-driven initiative which aims to facilitate entry, retention and progression for women working in ICT.

Mentor Programme

“I 100% now believe that there’s a place for me in the IT industry.”Gilmore College for Girls
Go Girl, Go for IT has been successfully introducing girls from year 7 to 11 to the world of technology and enthusing them about a career and education in IT. Achieving a record number of over 1400 girls in 2014 from over 42 Victorian schools, we run this truly unique event every two years. Currently hosted at Deakin University, Go Girl, Go for IT is designed like an innovative trade fair, with sponsors from many industries and businesses running interactive workshops and stands to showcase the vast opportunities available within the IT industry. Guest speakers offer inspiration to this future generation via interactive sessions and in 2016 we have the amazing Sophie Blachford from Instagram as our ambassador. Travel to the event is also subsidized so no girl misses out.

Transitioning from university into a career in ICT can be tricky and historically the industry has lost women into other careers at this point. Our graduate program helps open up the opportunities for these young women and connect them to potential employers. We run a graduate event each year designed to hook up graduates with companies interested in recruiting. It’s a chance for organisations to talk about the benefits of working with them and outline the programs they have on offer. In addition we offer practical support and advice on broader topics like how to conduct a good interview, to help you succeed in your first step in an ICT career. Specifically our program objectives are:

“I’ve found the [VIC ICT Mentoring] Program to be incredibly valuable. It’s had a definite impact on my career (I’ve gone up a role grade and am leading BAs on projects now, which I credit in part to the skills I’ve developed during my mentoring year), and to my personal life. I’ve learned to take control of my career and have developed a lot more confidence in my dealings with people in general.”Mentee - Katie Tudor
The VIC ICT Mentoring Program is designed to:

  • Assist the professional development of women in ICT and foster networking
  • Provide the opportunity for ICT professionals to be a mentor and contribute to the ICT industry

Who can participate?

  • Mentee

The Mentee role is open to members of the Victorian Women in ICT Network only. Mentees can nominate to be mentored in either ICT or leadership or a combination of both.

  • Mentor

The Mentor role is open to members and non-members, both male and female. Mentors require experience in ICT and/or leadership roles plus a desire to assist women in ICT to progress in their careers.

How is the Program run?

The Mentoring Program begins with an induction event in February where registered Mentors and Mentees will have the opportunity to meet their pre-matched Mentors/Mentees (based on information provided upon registration). Mentors/Mentees provide their preferences for final selection, in addition to being briefed on the program.

All mentors and mentees will be paired up before the end of February, when the mentoring relationship will formally get underway. VIC ICT for Women will provide participants with:

  • access to guidance and reference material
  • an ability to network via an online community
  • webinars delivered throughout the year
  • informal meet-ups

The Mentoring Program will conclude with an End of Year celebration event in November.

What is the time commitment?

Mentees and mentors must be able to commit 1-2 hours per month for the duration of the Program.

Over 125 participants from various ICT industries participated in 2015 and we have over 135 participants in the 2016 Program.
